Big day today, ran a Marathon distance in under 4 hours! I have to be happy with that. I think I can do so much better with just a little more training. I was happy holding just above 11 kph average to about the 19 km mark then I hit a couple of hills which knocked the hell out of me. I was unable to pick up the pace on the slight inclines enough to even keep in the high 10 kph average range. I was unaware, in the early stages of the run, that I was in the VO2Max heart rate range and I think this had a detrimental effect on my overall performance. I will probably not try this again for 2 or 3 weeks at which time I will try to keep my heart rate down in the early stages.
My 1 km split times show how I was not able to keep the speed/pace at the earlier better rate. I was amazed to find I was able to push my pace up on the final 1 km split when I felt I was unlikely to manage the distance in under 4 hours. I threw everything I could muster, which shows in the 1 km split chart. I was barely able to walk afterwards but it was important to me.
I have included the route below in case anyone reading this is interested to find out where I went.
For those entrenched in Strava I have the details here:
- Distance: 43 km’s
- Av Pace: 5m33s/km
- Av Hr: 174
